Blogger sinks SWAM, encourages caution with LinkedIn Groups

Earlier this month, Mark Williams–a.k.a. “Mr. LinkedIn”–shared a post that’s worth reading if you’re a member of any LinkedIn Groups. Williams’ post, “The Great LinkedIn SWAM!” discusses the perils of site-wide auto moderation, which LinkedIn put into place earlier this year. In short, the policy, designed to penalize habitual spammers, has affected many innocent users. As Williams explains, “I have heard countless examples of professional, credible individuals who have never even considered spamming anyone getting hit by SWAM.” Read Williams’ post to learn more, but in the meantime, be extra careful with what you share via Groups–and in selecting which Groups to join in the first place.

  2. Can I just say what a comfort to find a person that really
    understands what they’re discussing on the internet. You actually know how to bring a problem to light and make it important. More people should check this out and understand this side of your story. I can’t believe you’re not more popular since you most certainly possess the gift.

  3. One piece of advice that wasn’t discussed in either post: before posting in a group, read the group rules. If promotional material is not welcome in the Discussion section, don’t post it. If position announcements are only welcome in the Jobs section, don’t put them elsewhere.

    Following the rules isn’t a failsafe approach, but not following the rules increases the likelihood of being blocked.

  4. It wasn’t so long ago that Jeff Weiner proudly said LinkedIn was all about “members first”. SWAM has shown how quickly a company can go off track. In early November Jeff Weiner explained to the New York Times:

    “So our culture has five dimensions: transformation, integrity, collaboration, humor, and results. And there are six values: members first; relationships matter; be open, honest and constructive; demand excellence; take intelligent risks; and act like an owner. And by far the most important one is members first. We as a company are only as valuable as the value we create for our members.”

    Less than two months later his minions implemented SWAM. As I write in my new blog post, SWAM is anything but members first.
