Last week, LinkedIn announced a major milestone: its 200 millionth member. That’s a nearly 50 percent jump from 2011 and more than double the 2010 number.
What’s driving LinkedIn’s growth? It’s a response to the overall growth of social media in a couple different ways. First, as people get more comfortable with social media, they’re more likely to use different platforms (in a sense, then, LinkedIn is somewhat indebted to Facebook for its growth). In addition, as more people use social networks, they are looking to reach different audiences and satisfy different needs (in this case, LinkedIn growth is somewhat of a reaction to Facebook and other social media sites that are inadequate for professional networking.
Whatever the reason, one thing’s certain: LinkedIn will grow even larger in 2013. That means you’ll have an even greater opportunity to stay connected to your network.
